La "trilogía vikinga" de Hrafn Gunnlaugsson es una curiosa muestra de cine histórico de aventuras basada en los esquemas del western y el cine de samurais, que tiene como referencias principales el cine de Kurosawa y el spaguetti-western de Sergio Leone [la "trilogía del dólar": Por un puñado de dólares (1964), La muerte tenía un precio (1965) y El bueno, el feo y el malo (1966)]. La primera entrega de la serie, El vuelo del cuervo, es un remake de Por un puñado de dólares (1964), remake a su vez de Yojimbo (Akira Kurosawa, 1961), inspirada en la novela negra "Cosecha roja" de Dashiell Hammet.
