Terence Davies nació en 1945, el último de diez hermanos, en Liverpool, ciudad donde creció. "Children", su primer cortometraje, rodado en 1976, se basa en sus propias experiencias en el Colegio Católico del Sagrado Corazón de Liverpool, que abandonó tras cumplir quince años. Tras ellos, entró a trabajar como ayudante de contable, puesto que tuvo durante años. Después fue contable especializado en finanzas y administración, durante doce años, en una oficina frente al famoso Cavern Club de Liverpool, el cual jamás pisó. Pero en cambio, durante esos años, Terence frecuentó el Club de Escritores de Liverpool (donde trabajó en la sección de radiotelefonía) y llegó a ser también un actor aficionado en varias compañías.

En 1972 entró en la Academia de Arte Dramático de Conventry, donde escribió su primer guión, "Children", que se convertiría en su primer cortometraje producido por el British Film Institute bajo la guía de Mamoun Hassan. Con "Children" ganó el Hugo de Bronce en el Festival de Chicago. Tras "Children", Terence Davies obtuvo un puesto en la Escuela Nacional de Cine de Londres mientras interpretaba pequeños papeles para la televisión. En la Escuela rodó en 1980 "Madonna and Child", continuación de su corto anterior en el que profundizaba en la vida de Robert Tucker, un católico homosexual que tras haber perdido a su padre a los 11 años se enfrenta a sus propios fantasmas y fantasías sexuales mientras cuida de su madre enferma. Con este corto obtuvo el Hugo de Oro en el Festival de Cork.

Después de abandonar la escuela completó la trilogía con "Death and Tranfiguration". La ayuda financiera de la Asociación de las Artes de Londres y, de nuevo, el British Film Institute fueron decisivos para llevar a cabo el proyecto. En "Death and Transfiguration" presentaba a un Robert Tucker agonizante a cuyo recuerdo acuden momentos clave de su vida. La unidad temática de estos tres cortos permitió a Davies el unirlas y proyectarlas consecutivamente bajo el nombre genérico de "The Terence Davies Trilogy". Con esta recopilación recogió grandes elogios, críticas favorables y premios en el Festival de Locarno de 1984, Oberhausen y Cádiz (1985). También ganó el premio al mejor filme inglés en el National Film Teathre de Londres en 1984.


Sinopsis:

Three parts: Children, 1974 / Madonna and Child, 1980 / Death and Transfiguration, 1983.

Part 1- CHILDREN
The theme is violence - social and domestic - and its effect on the main character Robert Tucker. It is told in a series of extended flashbacks and reveals incidents from his childhood. The film ends with a memory - the death of his father and the boy appears to be trapped in his sexuality and his childhood.

Part 2 - MADONNA AND CHILD
It is a film about the conflict between Catholicism and sexuality. A severe and intimate portrait of Robert Tucker in middle age who is trapped in his private and public personnae.

Part 3 - DEATH AND TRANSFIGURATION
Part three completes the story in more ways than being merely the final installment. It is a summing up of Tucker`s life and his attitudes towards the remembered events of his life and his coming to terms with his mortality.

¡Hola! Yo me los bajé del pando a partir del enlace que me pasaron de cinexilio... Y me pasa que Chindren y Madonna and child no se me oyen bien. Se producen como chasquidos cada cierto tiempo; no es algo continuo, pero se va repitiendo... (por lo demás, sí, no hay problema, pero queda fatal...)

¿Estos se oyen bien? No sé si alguien me lo podría confirmar. Si eso me los volveré a bajar de aquí.

Yo no escucho nada raro en esos dos cortos, elaine. No los he visto completos, pero si hay algo desde luego no es molesto, y debe ocurrir muy de tarde en tarde. En los fragmentos comprobados, ni un solo click ha llegado a mi oreja buscando hacer daño a mis delicados tímpanos.
