Still Alone is a video project that involved 27 artist coming from Canada, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Indonesia.

A project that has been carried on for more than an year, hundred mails and many forum has been dedicated to this project. This video bands together shots taken in Paris, New York, London, Buenos Aires, Berlin and Java island. The common subject is 'the megalopolis' , the new space of collective alienation, where the lack of ideas, the incommunicability, the incapacity to love and to understand each other, the interior vacuum and the social incapability of the individual find fertile land to grow up and where it seems more and more perceptible the development of this lack of relation between the individual and the space itself.

The video starts with an analysis of the convulsive and chaotic big city, of its variegated but substantially anonymous crowd, incapable to communicate and considerate as the main cause of alienation. Man finds himself in a social structure in which he feels obliged to withdraw himself in more and more secluded but technologically efficient space.

City reflects the double side of man: the individual and the collective one. They both well in us and the history of human thought is a continuos questioning about their interaction between these two dimensions. Nowadays, their balance is difficult, sometimes one prevails on the other and often we feel ourselves immersed in a total insanity, sometimes we assume the one, other times the other, and we completely identify only with one of these sides. It prevails an egoistic individualism or a crowd that become flock. The citizen, conceived as a symbol of an individual that forms and is formed by a social net, tends to disappear. Modern cities are once again the concrete actuation of this insanity. On the one side we see a rising development of welling-structures more and more 'monofamiliar', on the other side the increase in number in the suburban areas of shopping centres: floors where we feel homologated in the easy-buying rite, that misguide us to be aware individual. Nothing in the middle: markets disappear, squares are only crossing places, no more politics in the streets. But social and individual cannot be separated, because one exists in virtue of the other. Relationship past them together. Without relationships there is only solitude in our own little apartments and only alienation in big urban shopping centres.

The metropolis appears therefore as a continuous flow of messages and information that produces signs of ambivalent value. On the one hand, homogenisation unified the space of the capitalistic production and contributed to a process of flattening of the places of exchange; on the other hand modernist inheritance left to the architecture the absolute fear of indeterminate. This is the main reason why the vacuum spaces report a condition of instability towards the organisational and hierarchical structures, if compared with the rest of the city. Vacuum spaces fulfil neither the requirements of politics nor the values of the community, because they often assume characteristic too alternative, sometimes antagonist to the consolidated tissue. They have their self-dimension, they are independent of the built volumes, they have any function of prefiguration of an urban space, as the traditional open space inside the city have. What makes them similar one another is the deep relationship between the rarefaction and fragmentary character of the buildings and the correspondent dense and active ‘behavioural’ inclination.

So, alienation, that generated and is generated by contemporary insanity, is the main character of this video.

The video (19.50 min.), written and directed by Luca Curci, will be shown in a series of international exhibitions.
