"I hope you know," Gordon Gano sings, "That this will go down on your permanent record." The line, which gives title to this live release (and a greatest hits collection), comes from the Violent Femmes' debut. It's also the first in a three-song encore from this 49-minute show, recorded at Virginia's Boat House on July 21, 1991. The Wisconsin trio gives an impassioned performance, pulling out all the stops for a spooky version of "Confessions," for which they bring out Caleb Alexander on saxophone. Throughout the show, singer/guitarist Gano looks like a mischievous choirboy, bass player Brian Ritchie looks like a hillbilly (must be that mullet), and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo looks like Moe Tucker in that he too plays an upright drum kit. Most importantly, though, the band sounds great. Permanent Record includes seven videos spanning the Femmes' career, from 1983-1994, along with a lo-fi street performance of "Kiss Off." --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Product Description:
The Boat House in Norfolk, Virginia, was perhaps our most frequented venue for a period bordering on two decades. It was blown away in a hurricane a few years back. RIP. The site of many great and weird moments. The gig you are watching was memorable for being 130 degrees Fahrenheit on stage. I know that because they had a thermometer up there. We wanted to record a lot of material, so we slaved away in that furnace for two hours. By the end we were totally drained. -Brian Richie Track Listings: Look Like That, Out the Window, Fat, Blister in the Sun, Prove My Love, Country Death Song, Old Mother Reagan, Confessions, Girl Trouble, Add It Up, Kiss Of, Good Feeling, More Money Tonight
Finally, a live performance DVD from a great band..., October 11, 2005
Reviewer: Bokor (United States) - See all my reviews
I've been waiting for a DVD from the Violent Femmes for years. Periodically, I would check to see if one had finally been released. Now, here I am reviewing it.
It's an excellent collection of songs - a very strong playlist. The performance is solid. The audio is very well done. The filming is simple; it doesn't detract from the experience. One is even allowed to watch the performers without any special effects or rapid editing.
Having the videos is a nice extra. The audio for the street performance is weak; however, it does give one a strong insight into the origins of this band and their ability to play for a crowd. It was probably recorded with a camcorder.
My only complaint is simple. According to the notes in the DVD, this performance was approximately two hours. There is maybe fifty minutes worth presented on this DVD. Some noteable songs, like Black Girls, are obviously missing. That is my only complaint.
I am proud to have this DVD sitting amongst my ever growing collection of live performances.

No he encontrado mucha información

Video:
The full-screen presentation of the concert looks incredibly saturated, with a significant amount of light noise. The camera shakes at several parts, jittering the picture as well.

Notes: This release combines pro-shot footage recorded during Puppy's 2004 tours of North America (specifically the Montreal (11.09.04) and Toronto (11.10.04)) gigs with classic video footage of Puppy's 1990 and 1992 tours filmed by Jim Van Bebber in Cincinnati. 'Information Warfare' is William Morrison's documentary on the Gulf War and U.S. foreign policy. A hand-filmed 32-minute documentary of the band's 1988 'Head Trauma' tour of Europe, titled 'Eurotrauma: Skinny Puppy Live In Europe 1988'- was filmed by Dwayne Goettel and re-edited by Ogre. Initial PAL copies of this DVD were riddled with digital pixillations and glitches, and SPV quickly recalled these copies for replacement. Additionally, longtime SP friend/video coordinator and live guitarist William Morrison has mentioned he is working on another release to showcase his own video productions, including, of course, his video masterworks for Puppy, Ohgr, and other bands and artists.

Burn to Shine is a film series produced by Fugazi's Brendan Canty and directed by film maker Christoph Green. This is the first installment in the series and is titled Burn to Shine 01: Washington DC. It features live performances by Bob Mould, Ted Leo, Ian Mackaye's new band The Evens, Weird War (ex-Make Up), Q and Not U (Dischord records), Canty's band Garland of Hours, Medications (ex-Faraquet), and French Toast (featuring James Canty of Make Up, and Jerry Busher of Fugazi).
We travel from town to town and film bands performing in houses that are about to be demolished or burned to the ground. They document the doomed house, the bands, and the demolition, put it together in a 45 minute movie, put it out on DVD and move on to the next town. Each DVD/town has a different curator that is entrenched in the respective music scene and who can pick out what he or she considers their favorite bands. This allows us to put the bands in a geocentric context.
The bands in Burn to Shine 01: Washington DC set up in a vacant bungalow that was going to be demolished and performed in the quaint living room at full volume, playing just one song each, for the camera's alone. The songs were recorded on a multitrack recording unit and filmed in HD with multiple cameras, which gives the film an incredibly crisp, clean look and sound. The bands play in this marginal, domestic environment: a tiny freezing cold room in front of an unlit fireplace on what turned out to be the coldest day of the year.
All the filming was done on January 14th 2004, in Bethesda, Maryland just before the house was burned to the ground by the fire department. Please click here (cities) to learn more about the house and it's history.
The DVD also contains footage of the burn wtih original music by Brendan Canty, and an extras section with beautifully shot still photos of all the bands with outtakes and incidental sounds, and a very groovy tune from our boys in the French Toast Band.
Official release date for this DVD is January 25th on the DVD label Trixie DVD and distributed by Touch and Go Records.
The DVD also contains an extras section with beautifully shot still photos of all the bands with outtakes and music underneath.
A second film, due to be released in July, was shot in a house in Chicago and features Wilco, Shellac, Tortoise, Freakwater, Tight Phantoms, Pit er Pat, The Ponys, The Lonesome Organist, and the Red Eyed Legends.

Comentarios:
Part New Wave, part pure punk, part Brit pop, the Psychedelic Furs have changed little over the course of their more than two decades together, as this video, recorded in Los Angeles in 2001, makes crystal clear. That means that Furs fans will delight in the 15-song, 75-minute concert's nonstop onslaught of thick, echo-drenched slabs of guitar and frontman Richard Butler's braying vocals. Sure, the lyrics are largely unintelligible, and the sound tends toward the monotonous; Butler says nary a word to the audience, and there are no on- screen titles, which makes it tough to tell one song from another. But the singer has undeniable charisma and energy, as well as some catchy tunes, including, of course, "Pretty in Pink," from the '86 movie of that name. And the 15-minute, three-song acoustic segment is a welcome bonus at the end of the program. --Sam Graham
