Hola pues os dejo aquí los dos discos de este dúo (guitarra, voz y batería) que han estado de gira por España estos días con Low. Los discos estan editados en el propio sello de Low y es colaborador asiduo del dúo el propio bajista de Low (Zak Sally) y en el último disco también colaboran Alan y Mimi.

It's the second-oldest love story in music: Boy meets drugs. It happened to Darren Jackson and, as in so many other love stories, somebody got screwed. Several years ago, the artist who calls himself Kid Dakota left his hometown of Bison, South Dakota, for East Coast academia, only to fall headlong into heroin addiction; it was then, and during a subsequent relocation to Minnesota—the land of 10,000 lakes and nearly as many rehab clinics—that his elegiac 2000 EP So Pretty came together. Chairkickers Union, a small imprint run by the formative slow-core outfit Low, rereleased the record with additional tracks last year; as a full-length, it garnered local acclaim but remains largely under the radar.
That's a shame. So Pretty is a gorgeously sprawling fever dream laced with some of the most evocative addiction imagery since Elliott Smith's darker days. Jackson, along with musical partner Christopher McGuire and sometime guest (and Low bassist) Zak Sally, double-tracks bleak vocals with woozy guitar and stark, bare-bones percussion—including rattling ice-cube trays—to haunting effect. "Smokestack" peels back an initially idyllic lovers' moment with the pleading, defeated refrain: "I promise to quit / If you promise to stay"; on the title track, he sings softly, "Well, it's dull and it's bent and I can't read the numbers / But nevertheless, it's my friend."
It would all be too unremittingly grim if Jackson didn't have such a sure sense of melody. The affair may be long over, but he's written a memorable good-bye letter.

This theme of futility continues on the Sparklehorse-like epic "Homesteader" ("The windmills are spinning to no avail. But nature's indifferent/ It's beyond God's control") while the guitars spit sand and the background vocals of Low's Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker circle like hungry crows.
Regrettably, there are points where Jackson loses the map and succumbs to the pitfalls of narrative songwriting, as on the stereotype-ridden reservation portrait "Pine Ridge" ("With their government check they go buy liquor/ and it makes their thoughts grow dim and dimmer"), a track that's still almost saved by the closing powwow pound of Sally and McGuire.Ê Less fortunate is the over-long dirge "Starlight Motel" which operates under the cliched assumption (inspired by Norman Bates and David Lynch) that mysterious evil forces lurk behind every blinking "Vacancy" sign in the country.
Also less-than-completely-successful is "10,000 Lakes", a song that's very obviously a deeply personal tribute to Jackson's current home: Minnesota. In addition to all those lakes, Minnesota is also home to several prominent drug treatment centers-- including one where Jackson was able to overcome his own chemical dependency. Given that heavy emotional backdrop, it seems odd that Jackson spends so much of the song trying to lighten the mood with throwaway lines like "I didn't come for ice-fishing/ I didn't come for duck huntingÉI'm no fan of the Vikings or subzero wind chills." These smirking jokes ring hollow, especially when contrasted with the understated beauty of the song's acoustic arrangement and Jackson's slippery, elongated delivery of the heartfelt chorus "I came for the taper/ I came to get better."
But although there are some rough patches to negotiate, The West Is the Future contains ample evidence of an ambitious, talented band just beginning to find its legs.Ê Judging from the themes of these songs, Kid Dakota wouldn't approve overly optimistic predictions of their future. So suffice it to say that here the band displays a potential similar to what you might've detected on Modest Mouse's earliest releases had you been paying better attention, and that it should be fun to see what Jackson and his cohorts can deliver.

Aprovecho que hasta mañana estoy en casa y os pongo el nuevo disco de Four Tet que saldrá a la venta el 23 de Mayo y también el excepcional "Rounds". Four tet es el proyecto electrónico del guitarrista del grupo de post-rock Fridge, Kieran Hebden. Aunque debido a su éxito tras "Rounds" ya no se sabe cual es el proyecto paralelo. jeje. Sonido entre electronica, trip-hop, free-jazz, etc, etc. Esto de poner etiquetas no me mola nada.

Lo cierto es que a la fuerza de postear el hilo ha quedado demasiado desorganizado. No sé cuál sería la fórmula para aclararlo, pero se necesita urgentemente una solución.17 páginas y creciendo... ¿qué tal una ramificación genérica? Crear hilos musicales temáticos podría ser una solución ¿no?
¿Qué tal una especie de discografía (al estilo "Filmografías") y que alguien se ocupe de ello actualizando un post inicial?
A mí me mola el eclectismo que se respira aquí, yo abogo más por un bonzopoe's resurrection - Buena música, no tan conocida returns y abrir otro hilo que continúe este. Así el que se haya chupado todo el primer volumen, ya sólo atiende al segundo. Se cierra el primero con un último post que enlace con el segundo y así no hay lío. Yo incluso lo dejaría fijo.
Y bueno, aprovechando, para aquellos que se quedaron prendados del jazz acústico que desprendía la película Acordes y Desacuerdos, aquí va un poco de jazz manouche o gitano:

este es un cd doble, son canciones sobre la mafia italiana, algunas creo que cantadas por verdaderos mafiosos en la carcel!!! es un disco muy recomendable. además de las canciones se escuchan conversaciones de mafiosos hablando sobre la "omertá" la "camurra"... en definitiva, la banda sonora que debería haber tenido "el padrino" (y que me perdone Nino rota).
no tenia ni idea que era el "usuario numero 18 de DXC" lo que me da todavía mas verguenza por ser taaaaan pasivo a la hora de intentar aportar algo a la comunidad
