Diamanda Galas - Malediction and Prayer
Diamanda Galás hardly needs introduction. An extraordinary singer, composer and pianist of unparalleled emotional intensity, she performs with a purity of intent and execution which leaves her listeners breathless. Her voice is one moment serpentine, the next a juggernaut. The subjects she addresses are profound and terrible; her response - rage and grief - beautiful and cathartic. This alchemy flourishes in her latest collection of works for solo voice and piano, "Malediction and Prayer".
"Malediction and Prayer" is a recording of live concerts that were performed internationally by Galás in 1996 and 1997 under the title "Malediction and Prayer: Concert for the Damned". The material included - death songs, prison songs, love songs and songs about isolation - represents Galás concern with suffering, salvation and justice. The recording begins with Phil Och's "Iron Lady", here a tribute to Aileen Wuornos, currently sitting on Florida's death row, and includes songs made popular by Johnny Cash ("25 Minutes to Go"), Mahalia Jackson ("Live the Life"), BB King ("The Thrill is Gone") and the Supremes ("My World is Empty Without You"). Also included is "Keigome" ("I'm Burning"), a rembetiko (outlaw) song by Stavros Xarhakos and Nikos Gatsos; songs by Willie Dixon and Son House; and poems by Charles Baudelaire, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Salvadoran guerrilla poet Miguel Mixco, set to music by Galás.
