Who Were the Minutemen?

Although the terms militia and minutemen are sometimes used interchangeably today, in the 18th century there was a decided difference between the two. Militia were men in arms formed to protect their towns from foreign invasion and ravages of war. Minutemen were a small hand-picked elite force which were required to be highly mobile and able to assemble quickly. Minutemen were selected from militia muster rolls by their commanding officers. Typically 25 years of age or younger, they were chosen for their enthusiasm, reliability, and physical strength. Usually about one quarter of the militia served as Minutemen, performing additional duties as such. The Minutemen were the first armed militia to arrive or await a battle.

Although today Minutemen are thought of as connected to the Revolutionary War in America, their existence was conceived in Massachusetts during the mid-seventeenth century. As early as 1645, men were selected from the militia ranks to be dressed with matchlocks or pikes and accoutrements within half an hour of being warned. In 1689 another type of Minuteman company came into existence. Called Snowshoemen, each was to "provide himself with a good pair of snowshoes, one pair of moggisons, and one hatchet" and to be ready to march on a moment's warning. Minutemen also played a role in the French and Indian War in the 1750's. A journal entry from Samuel Thompson, a Massachusetts militia officer, states, "...but when our men were gone, they sent eleven more at one minute's warning, with 3 days provision..." By the time of the Revolution, Minutemen had been a well-trained force for six generations in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Every town had maintained its 'training band'. The adversity that this region faced-Native-American uprisings, war with France, and potential for local insurrections, social unrest, and rioting-provided ample reason to adhere to a sound militia organization. In his recent book, perhaps David Hackett Fischer puts it best, "The muster of the Minutemen in 1775 was the product of many years of institutional development...it was also the result of careful planning and collective effort." (p. 151). By the time of the Revolution, Massachusetts had been training, drilling, and improving their militia for well over a hundred years.

Unfortunately, one thing the Minutemen lacked was central leadership. This disadvantage would lead to their dissolution. In February of 1775 Concord was one of the first towns to comply with the order to create Minutemen companies out of the militia. Of approximately 400 militia from Concord's muster rolls, one hundred would also serve as Minutemen. When a battle took place Minutemen companies from several towns combined their units. An officer from the 43rd Regiment of Foot was sent to the North Bridge in Concord with a number of light infantry. Minutemen from Concord, Acton, Littleton, and other towns combined forces. After a few volleys were fired, the British light infantry retreated back to the Concord Common area. Lacking central command, with each company of Minutemen loyal to their own town, they did not pursue the redcoats. In the running battle that ensued fifteen miles back to Boston the Massachusetts militia would see their last action as Minutemen in history. The militia would go on to form an army, surrounding Boston and inflicting heavy casualties on the British army at Bunker and Breed's Hill.

Thus, although lacking central command, the Minutemen were still better organized and battle-tested than any other part-time military. They were a vital and necessary force, playing a crucial role in not only the Revolutionary War, but in earlier conflicts. Without these "ready in a minute" men, our history may have been written in a very different way.

Devics are vocalist Sara Lov and multi-instrumentalist and sometime singer Dustin O'Halloran, a musical duo from Los Angeles who found a home in Italy after signing to Bella Union records in the late 90s

Devics returned to LA in 2004 to complete work on this their third album. Their fans will not be disappointed. “Push the Heart” is a revelation, a new beginning for Devics that highlights past triumphs and gives the listener a glimpse of new musical destinations.

The album begins with “Lie to Me,” a charming platform for O’Halloran’s cascading pianos and Lov’s yearning vocals, calling out over a ghost town of disembodied whistles and funereal organ. Second track “A Secret Message to You” shows Devics talent for finding inspiration everywhere, keeping time with the found art of O’Halloran bashing out a letter on an old typewriter. “Song for a Sleeping Girl” is an opportunity for the listener to relish O’Halloran’s sweet soliloquy to a sleeping sweetheart.

Underscoring O’Halloran’s talent for combining modern-sounding production with classic chord progression is “Distant Radio,” which finds Lov riding the melodic rise and fall of verse and chorus on the poetry of intangible connections. Lov’s grand rumination on lost love, “Just One Breath”, is a future Devics classic with descending guitar lines that spin dark mystery. “Moments” finds O’Halloran in rolling six-eight mode creating a mini-film noir soundtrack of upright bass, piano, and brushes on snare while Lov’s words – “eyes and tears and aches and bones and gold and fire” – rise like plumes of cigarette smoke on celluloid.

A rare gem with O’Halloran at the mic, “If We Cannot See” is a majestic, epic waltz with an anthemic chorus that approximates Leonard Cohen fronting Coldplay. This is followed by “City Lights”, a dainty, heartbreaking waltz which leads perfectly into “Come Up”, the album’s haunting final track.

---------------------

On their fourth full-length album, Devics don't stray far from their usual ethereal piano-plus-sampler, late-night vibe. Sara Lov again provides the majority of the vocals, her voice coming across as a restrained blend of Hope Sandoval, Mary Timony, and Kristin Hersh while offering up tales of love, lies, and loss. Lov's instrument is certainly lulling, but not that distinctive, especially within the confines of Dustin O'Halloran's shoegazer-like audio web. Too often, O'Halloran layers in the same cooing background hum, to the point where the album nearly devolves into an aural bout of coffee-table lethargy. With many of the songs rolling along at a slow drizzle, only the Mum-like "Secret Message to You," with its typewriter sound effect glitch, and the fractured "Just One Breath" really pick up steam. "Distant Radio," in theme and execution, travels a bit too far into Mojave 3 mimicry but lacks the bombast that put that group over the top. O'Halloran's deeper vocal contributions are a nice contrast, but can't match the subtlety or texture of influences like Leonard Cohen or Richard Hawley. Album closer "Come Up" is particularly pretty. Still, one gets the sense that this is an album recorded with white gloves, and the calculation behind the tunes is nearly tangible. With more variation, more separation in the mix, and a bit more conviction and passion overall, Push the Heart would be easier to recommend. As it stands, it's just a slightly-better-than-average indie chamber pop excursion.</td></tr></table></td></tr></table>

Cuidado con el concierto Padrino, podrías pillar la gripe aviar, va a haber mucho gallo :P

Destroyer: Destroyer's Rubies (Merge Records, 2006)

Imagen
Martina Leduc
Daniele Sepe

Imagen

There is really no way to explain the mind of this Neopolitan composer arranger and musician. The roots music of Naples and its evirons is only the beginning of the stew. It's thickened with classic jazz, pureed with pop and soul, then served on a plate of Brecht garnished with avant garde idosyncracies. And that's just the half of it. - CF
Daniele Sepe Bio: in the artist's words
Daniele Sepe was born the 17th of April 1960 in Naples. Studying the flute at the conservatoire San Pietro a Majella Daniele Sepe gets a diploma, then he starts his many-sided activity with the "Gruppo operaio 'E Zezi di Pomigliano". In 1976 he participates with this group in international festivals in Rennes, Martigues and Bonn, he records the album "Tammurriata dell'Alfa Sud" for "Dischi del Sole".
As his "educated" activity of concerts ( auditorium of RAI in Naples, international competition of Stresa, "Long concert" of "Estate a Napoli" ) continues, he starts to get interested also in playing the saxophone and jazz. After the diploma, being tired of preparing exhausting concerts for the old nobel-women, who never miss the meetings at the club of the artists and without being in possession of a tail-coat, he starts recording in different studios and playing "live" with a lot of people (Nino Bonocore, Mia Martini, Teresa de Sio, Roberto de Simone, Gino Paoli etc. ) of whom the congenial ones are only Peppino Gagliardi, Eduardo de Crescenzo, Roberto Murolo and Nino D'Angelo.
He creates problems also in the ambit of "Vesuwave" where he co-operates composing arrangements for groups like "Little Italy", "Bisca", "Walhalla", "Degrado" etc. Dangerously he starts composing music of his own and the names he uses for the different formations are only a vague idea of what an unaware spectator might expect of his performances; "Art Ensemble of Soccavo", "Luchistu Luchiddu e i suoi Abbracalabria", "Orchestra dell'On. Trombetta", formations with different numbers of musicians; from the trio of only wind instruments to the big band of twenty musicians. Paradoxically the people like all that and more incredible is that also the critics enjoy it (with the right and proper exclusion of the jazz-critics ).
At first he starts to document his work on the unavoidable demo-tapes "without no hope" and later on (1989) he records an album paying the production costs by himself giving it the suggestive title "Malamusica"(non è tutto), which means "Butmusic" (isn't all) "Badmusic" (isn't all).
Someone ignores him totally and someone screams "how marvellous".That's life. Fortunately our hero's album is an article that sells well so, not contended, he records another one giving it the ordinary title "L'Uscita dei Gladiatori" ("The Release of the Gladiators"). He palms it off -with rare lack of scruples- upon "Soluzionisti Virgin".
Then he escapes to Timbuctu with the millions of milliards of shells earnt thanks to the sale of the album. Before his villainous escape he has time enough to write music for the theatre ("Falso Movimento", "Teatri Uniti", "Compagnia del Sancarluccio"), for the ballet (International festival of dance and poetry, "Menti Labili") and especially for the cinema ("Blues Metropolitano", "Diciassette" by Enrico Caria, "Rimini, Rimini", "L'amore molesto", "Cronaca di un amore violato", "Lettere dall'America", "Il caricatore"...).
Without any responsability at all they send him to the festival of Marsiglia, to Nantes, to the Womex of Bruxelles and to the Wexford Opera Festival (EIRE) to represent Italy, just because no one else wanted to go there. He also succeds in doing a serious thing during the war in the gulf when he enlists about fifty Neapolitan musicians to produce a tape of songs of peace giving it gratis outside the work and the school-yards of Naples. In 1994 he publishes the CD "Vite Perdite", which finally brings him a bit of fortune, giving him the opportunity to partecipate in numerous festivals and the yearned entry into the play-list in Italy first and in Europe afterwards. This album is even awarded among 1OO albums to be saved during the Nineties by "Rockstar" magazine, and best album during the year according to "Rockerilla"; besides the authoritative English magazine "Folk-roots" presents it as the only italian album worthy to be listened.
All this evidences that the promotion goes right if you give a fair present to the fair reporter ..... In 1995 the album "Spiritus Mundi" comes out and reconfirms the success of "Vite Perdite". These two albums in question are "sacked" by "Polygram", "Il Manifesto" and "La Repubblica" for several great run anyhologies. Collaborating with "Il Manifesto" he publishes a CD entitled "Trasmigrazioni" involving a large number of musicians who are "immigrants" in Italy, and another called "Viaggi fuori dai paraggi" an anthology that - even though it was unheardable - "holes" the hit-parade according to readers of "Musica". In spite of this, that's life, as a thorn in the flesh, he didn't manage to partecipate neither in the Festival of Sanremo nor the village festival of the "fresella" of Ossitissi.
