Some folks might say that when you have a great movie, like, say, Brian De Palma's The Untouchables, you shouldn't mess with it. Those folks don't run Hollywood, however.
Variety reports that Paramount Pictures has announced a prequel to that Kevin Costner-, Sean Connery-, and Robert De Niro-starring film, to be called The Untouchables: Capone Rising. Antoine Fuqua is set to direct the project.
Before you roll your eyes in dismay, however, it's worth noting that the 1987 De Palma movie wasn't wholly original itself: It was based on a novel by Oscar Fraley and preceded by a four-year-long TV series in the early '60s. So just because Capone Rising is based on another tale doesn't mean it'll be derivative.
David Levien and Brian Koppelman are writing the screenplay, which will focus on the rise to power of Al Capone and the corresponding moral growth of Irish police officer Jimmy Malone, who is as crooked as the rest of the Windy City's cops until he recognizes the violence and ruthlessness with which Capone operates.
"The film starts on the eve of Capone's arrival, and while Malone wasn't the most corrupt cop, he operated at a time when every cop was on the take," Levien told Variety. "Once he crosses paths with Capone, he sees a level of violence and criminality that causes him to have a moral awakening."
It's unclear (though doubtful) whether De Niro and Connery will return to recap their roles as Capone and Malone, respectively.
Me parece increible.
