Sinopsis: Desde hace veinte años, el tímido Henry Holland (Alec Guinness) es el encargado de supervisar el traslado de los cargamentos de oro de un banco de Inglaterra, pero, harto de su gris existencia, idea un ingenioso plan para llevar a cabo un espectacular robo en el banco en que trabaja: se trata de trasladar el oro de Inglaterra a Francia en forma de souvenirs de la Torre Eiffel. Divertida comedia de robo perfecto de la Ealing, dirigida por el especialista Charles Crichton. Alec Guinness encarna de modo inolvidable a Henry, un personaje gris que acompaña los desplazamientos de un furgón blindado que transporta oro en barras. Sus jefes le considera un tipo honrado hasta la médula, pero poco imaginativo y sin ambiciones. Con lo que se convierte en fachada perfecta para tramar un golpe. La parte más complicada de robar los lingotes de oro para Henry es cómo sacarlo del país. Hasta que tiene una especie de revelación al conocer a Alfred, el nuevo inquilino de la pensión donde se hospeda. En efecto, Alfred tiene un pequeño taller donde fabrica recuerdos turísticos que se distribuyen por todo el mundo; de modo que le propone fundir el oro que van a robar, y convertirlo en pequeñas Torres Eiffel de recuerdo, que podrán fácilmente exportar a Francia. Con ayuda de dos ladrones expertos pero "honrados" llevan a cabo el robo, pero claro, algo saldrá mal.

El film de Crichton, presentado como un largo flash-back -una técnica usada también con muy buenos resultados en Ocho sentencias de muerte, de la Ealing-, tiene sus mejores bazas en presentar como piezas claves del golpe a dos personas normales y, en principio, sin tacha, lo que propicia, por ejemplo, que Henry sea considerado como un héroe por su entereza ante los ladrones. Con momentos divertidísimos y muy dinámicos, destaca la bajada de la Torre Eiffel y el esfuerzo por recuperar algunas torres perdidas, lo que lleva a Henry y Alfred a una exposición de la policía, desde donde se desencadena una vertiginosa persecución, sembrada de gags memorables. A modo anecdótico, señalar la fugaz presencia en el film de Audrey Hepburn con apenas un par de palabras y su encantadora sonrisa; dos años después llegaría su descubrimiento oficial en Vacaciones en Roma. Alec Guinness is Henry Holland, an unassuming transporter of gold bullion who, after working for twenty years with no rewards in sight for his faithful service to his company, decides to reward himself by stealing one million pounds worth of gold. Calling on his old friend Pendlebury (Stanley Holloway), a manufacturer of paperweights and an amateur sculptor, and a couple of Cockney crooks, Lackery (Sidney James) and Shorty (Alfie Bass), they conspire to lift a gold shipment. After absconding with the gold, Henry melts the gold into a collection of souvenir Eiffel Towers, which he then ships off to Paris. But chaos reigns when a group of English schoolgirls purchase the gold towers, and the gang now become embroiled in a wild goose chase to recover their stolen gold. -- Paul Brenner

AMG REVIEW: The Lavender Hill Mob and The Ladykillers can almost serve as companion pieces to each other. Both are hilarious British caper comedies of the 1950s, but both also feature astonishingly different central performances from Alec Guinness. While in The Ladykillers Guinness is a fiendish crook whose criminality is evident from his first appearance, in The Lavender Hill Mob he is a mousy milquetoast named Holland, the unlikeliest of thieves who uses the trust that others place in him to set his plan into motion. Guinness' delightful performance as Holland earned him his first Oscar nomination, and he is supported by a fun cast that includes Stanley Holloway, Sidney James, and Alfie Bass. T.E.B. Clarke's Oscar-winning script ingeniously sets up the story by having Holland recount his tale after-the-fact, and Clarke's characters and story line possess an unpredictability that makes the film easily maintain interest throughout. More than 35 years later, director Charles Crichton made another caper comedy, A Fish Called Wanda, that recaptured the carefree sensibility that makes The Lavender Hill Mob so enjoyable. It is also worth noting that a very young Audrey Hepburn has a brief appearance in the opening scene and veteran character actor Peter Bull can be quickly spotted in an unbilled cameo. -- Bob Mastrangelo
