Polémica cinta, rodada con talento por Jean-Pierre Melville, que consiguió el León de Oro en el Festival de Cine de Venecia. Un retrato descarnado sexual y moralmente, con secuencias tan conocidas como la del sueño. Debido a su temática, no se estrenó en España.

Basada en la novela de Béatrix Beck, su acción tiene lugar durante la ocupación francesa por los nazis durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En un pequeño pueblo vive una viuda, militante comunista, conocida en la región por su condición de agnóstica. Cambiará su forma de ver las cosas cuando conoce a un atractivo sacerdote, que le abre un nuevo mundo con sus teorías sobre el sentido de la vida y el cristianismo. La relación irá poco a poco desembocando en un incontrolable deseo sexual. Destacan sus diálogos brillantes y sus reflexiones dan qué pensar (DeCine21).

AMG SYNOPSIS: Jean-Paul Belmondo portrays Leon Morin, an altruistic priest who believes that any sin can be expunged by a good dose of faith. Emmanuelle Riva plays a wayward woman who long ago decided that the easiest way was the best. Belmondo makes it his mission to steer Riva onto the right path. AMG REVIEW: Léon Morin, prêtre was one of the first films to take a serious look at life in France under the Nazi occupation. Writer-director Jean-Pierre Melville uses his priest protagonist (Jean-Paul Belmondo) to chronicle the lives of the residents of the small occupied town, from those who fight in the Resistance to those who simply want to survive. The central story explores the sexual tension between priest and parishioner, with an unusually frank approach for the early 1960s. Melville's detailed, observant portrait imbues the film with a unique credibility, and Belmondo gives a sexy, charismatic performance that enhances the film's thematic contrasts. Léon Morin is also uncommon for the early 1960s in its passionate argument against anti-Semitism. Few films before or after have examined spirituality and religion in so convincing a manner. -- Richard Gilliam

Añadidos subtítulos corregidos en castellano.
La traducción de pizio, que es muy meritoria y aprovechable en su mayor parte, pero tiene muchos años y no ha sido modificada, debería ser objeto de una revisión. He marcado algunas discrepancias con los subtítulos ingleses de Criterion con [***] para facilitar la tarea a los posibles correctores/as.
Por otra parte, los subs en castellano contienen notables diferencias con respecto a los ingleses en cuanto a disposición y duración de las líneas de diálogo. Encana razonablemente bien, pero no les vendría mal un reajuste.
