(DeCine21)

IMDb. Racketeer Tony Gazotti is thankful that lawyer Jackson Durant helps him beat a murder rap, but Durant just does it for the thrill of it and refuses payment. Durant's defense of mobsters causes his firm to disown him and his girlfriend Sue to leave him. But when young Tom Siddell, Sue's new boyfriend, is framed for a murder, she is the first to come asking for Durant's help. Durant uses Gazotti's information network and the help of new girlfriend Gertie Waxted to find that rival gangster Jim Grelliman is involved in the framing of Siddell. When Durant sends Gertie to Grelliman's apartment in a bid to blow open the case, she is walking on thin ice.
AMG SYNOPSIS: Pendleton portrays a powerful gangster who is threatened by rival gangster Gordon. Baxter, a bored corporate lawyer, decides to defend Pendleton when he is accused to murder. Though he wins the case, he loses his position in a prestigious firm of Harvard attorneys--and his fiancee. Pendleton, a gangster with a sense of humor and heart of gold, gets involved in his life trying to make up for the problems he has created, but murders, romance, double crosses, gangland rivalry and friendship between different classes lead everyone on a merry chase. This good suspenseful melodrama is played out with a good sense of humor. -- Tana Hobart
In W. S. Van Dyke's mystery-crime drama, Myrna Loy starred as the intelligent, quick-witted, beautiful and charming Gertie Waxted - a high-class "call-girl" character (although never specifically labeled that in the film); in this pre-Code era film, she was regarded in a positive and sympathetic light; in the complex story, the mob framed "Park Avenue" man Tom Siddall (Phillips Holmes) for the murder of ex-moll girlfriend Mimi Montagne (Mae Clarke), so defense lawyer Jackson Durant (Warner Baxter) enlisted Gertie, Mimi's pretty apartment-mate, to help expose the real killer -- who was eventually revealed to be Tim Murtoch (George E. Stone), racketeer Jim Crelliman's (C. Henry Gordon) "finger man"; the film was marked by sexual innuendo and intimations that the 'call-girl' character was sexually free in a conversation with Jackson after spending the night in his apartment: "...last night. I didn't exactly have to fight for my honor. A few more weeks of this and I'll be out of condition. Say, are you still in love with someone, or are you just decent?"; in the film's last lines, Gertie was reluctantly planning to marry the lawyer: "I can't marry you. I'll ruin you with all your friends. Why, I'm not even a lady" to which he replied: "You're not, huh? Well, you'll do till a lady comes along" (The History of Sex in Cinema)
