No es casualidad que durante décadas Ben-Hur fuera la película con más Oscars (11) de la historia (y aún es menos injusto que su récord no haya sido todavía rebasado). Ben-Hur resume y condensa la quintaesencia del cine como entretenimiento y arte total: un espectáculo de principio a fin lleno de escenas épicas de una grandeza colosal, y al tiempo compuesto por maravillosas escenas íntimas -y llenas de detalles- no menos fascinantes. Todo al servicio de una memorable historia sobre la venganza y el perdón bifurcada en dos relatos que se entrecruzan y fluyen ante los ojos del espectador: el de Judá Ben-Hur como enemigo de su antiguo amigo Mesala y el de Judá Ben-Hur como contemporáneo de Jesús de Nazaret. Genial. Personalmente en esta obra maestra absoluta del cine yo no dejo de asombrarme con las interpretaciones de Hawkins, Boyd y Griffith, pero sobre todo con la de un inmenso Charlton Heston que se imbuye psicológica y físicamente en una actuación portentosa (y no del todo reconocida). La vigencia plena de esta película no se debe sólo a que la carrera de cuádrigas impresione todavía hoy, medio siglo después: se debe sobre todo a que la mirada de Heston/Ben Hur cuando llora, cuando ama y, sobre todo, cuando odia... esa mirada no se olvida jamás. Vidas paralelas.

Al tiempo del paso por la Tierra de Jesús de Nazaret, un judío, Ben-Hur, sufre junto a los suyos duras pruebas que le empujan a vengarse de quien fuera su amigo, el romano Messala.

Al acabar la guerra de secesión americana el general nordista Lew Wallace concibió su obra sobre un coetáneo de Jesús, esclavizado y condenado a galeras, mientras su madre y su hermana contraían la lepra en prisión. Fue tan popular que se llevó al teatro y al cine. En1925 Fred Niblo hizo una espectacular versión muda y en 1959 fue William Wyler quien tomó el relevo. Su film ganaría 11 Oscar, incluido el de mejor película. Curiosamente, Wyler fue ayudante de dirección en el film de Niblo.
A Wyler, Oscar al mejor director por tercera vez, le atraía rodar una película grandiosa, pero, acostumbrado a mimar a los personajes, sentenció: "Esta vez habrá que preocuparse de la gente". Y fue esa mezcla de intimismo y grandiosidad la que cautivó al público. Como decía un Charlton Heston que nunca ha estado mejor, "hizo un film personal", lo que no era nada fácil. A ello ayudó la intervención en el guión de Christopher Fry, que no sólo pergeñó unos diálogos razonables para le época descrita, sino que, según decía, vio que "la relación emocional significativa es la de amor/odio entre Messala y Ben-Hur". Resulta un gran acierto no mostrar nunca el rostro de Jesús, a quien se ve de espaldas. Y la escena de la crucifixión, con la sangre regando la Tierra, es de una belleza inefable (DeCine21).

AMG Synopsis: This 1959 version of Lew Wallace's best-selling novel, which had already seen screen versions in 1907 and 1926, went on to win 11 Academy Awards. Adapted by Karl Tunberg and a raft of uncredited writers including Gore Vidal and Maxwell Anderson, the film once more recounts the tale of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), who lives in Judea with his family during the time that Jesus Christ was becoming known for his "radical" teachings. Ben-Hur's childhood friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) is now an ambitious Roman tribune; when Ben-Hur refuses to help Messala round up local dissidents on behalf of the emperor, Messala pounces on the first opportunity to exact revenge on his onetime friend. Tried on a trumped-up charge of attempting to kill the provincial governor (whose head was accidentally hit by a falling tile), Ben-Hur is condemned to the Roman galleys, while his mother (Martha Scott) and sister (Cathy O'Donnell) are imprisoned. But during a sea battle, Ben-Hur saves the life of commander Quintus Arrius (Jack Hawkins), who, in gratitude, adopts Ben-Hur as his son and gives him full control over his stable of racing horses. Ben-Hur never gives up trying to find his family or exact revenge on Messala. At crucial junctures in his life, he also crosses the path of Jesus, and each time he benefits from it. AMG Review: William Wyler's Ben-Hur is the quintessential Hollywood biblical epic: a huge story, given a suitably exalted treatment, splashed across a broad canvas, and centered on a pair of well-drawn central characters. It's easy to forget that the film was the culmination of a cycle of religious epics that dated back slightly more than a decade, and closed out the genre as a viable Hollywood phenomenon. Since Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah in 1949, the public had shown a willingness to spend money on screen stories adapted from (or inspired by) the Old or New Testaments; the advent of the Cold War and the threat of thermo-nuclear annihilation likely made filmgoers start thinking about God, heaven, and the hereafter more than usual. Apart from MGM's trouble-plagued Quo Vadis? and 20th Century Fox's The Robe and its sequel, Demetrius and the Gladiators, however, few of the resulting movies did more than modest business at the box office, and none received any serious critical respectability. Ben-Hur proved to be an exception: Wyler's direction is sure and carefully balanced, avoiding any hint of the campiness and awkward line delivery that broke the verisimilitude of many of the other films; Charlton Heston, though far from the first choice for the title role (Paul Newman and Rock Hudson both turned it down), brings a compelling intensity to his performance; and Jack Hawkins' work as father figure Quintus Arrius lent the film a dignity comparable to Finlay Currie's St. Peter and Leo Genn's Petronius in Quo Vadis? Coupled with Yakima Canutt's stunt direction, those virtues proved unbeatable. Ben-Hur was the most expensive movie in MGM's history (perhaps not coincidentally, the 1926 silent version of the story had also been the most expensive non-sound production in the studio's history), but it ended up playing for two years in venues all over the world. The film earned enough money to keep the studio solvent, allowing them to acquire other films of this kind for distribution, most notably Nicholas Ray's King of Kings. Ben-Hur was virtually the last film of its kind made in Hollywood, or by Hollywood -- costs were too high to do too many more, and it also seemed as though audiences had seen most of the religious stories that were worth their moviegoing dollars. La nueva referencia, en cuanto a imagen se refiere, de ediciones de clásicos en Blu.

La verdad es que lucen muy bien esas capturas y también luce el Bluray y el HDTV que no se queda atrás.

Como viene siendo habitual un par de puntos que creo son buenos conocer.

Teníamos por ahí flotando 4 DVD´s y añadimos el Bluray: dvdbeaver

1) Warner Europe (4-Disc Special Edition) - Region 2,4,5 - PAL TOP
2) Warner (Four-Disc Collector's Edition) - Region 1,2,3,4 - NTSC SECOND
3) Warner - Region 1 - NTSC THIRD
4) Warner - Region 2/4 - PAL - FOURTH
5) Warner - 50th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition - Region FREE - Blu-ray - BOTTOM

El 3 y 4 llevan recorte de la imagen por lo que muestran menor información pero sin embargo la calidad y naturalidad de colores y demás es mejor que las ediciones coleccionista al menos para mí. El Bluray ha aclarado bastante la imagen, en donde el único "pero" tal vez sea en un color de los cielos en algunos tramos un pelín defectuoso pues tira más a blanco que a otra cosa pero en fin cuando le dan nitidez y claridad siempre hay que sacrificar alguna cosilla. La imagen está algo recortada a los lados con respecto a las ediciones en DVD 1 y 2 pero mínimamente. Por tanto podemos decir o digo que bajo mi punto de vista se ha hecho un buen trabajo, tomando lo mejor de las diferentes ediciones que teníamos y a su vez dándole un punto de claridad a la imagen que en los casos 3 y 4 era algo oscura y con unos colores más reales que los de las ediciones 1 y 2 que tenían el típico color "hepático" que tan poco luce.

Al que habia sincronizado el audio español de alguno de los otros DVDrips que circulan
por la mula, pero que no he comprobado con ninguno de los ripeos que nos propone
Marlowe62 en este post. Y cuyo elink encontrareis un poco mas abajo.

Como ya tengo un HDTVrip no voy a bajar el ripeo del post, por lo que alguien que si
lo haya bajado tendrá que confirmarnos si sincroniza o no con el HDTV de Holmes.

Como podeis comprobar por los datos de Mediainfo lo he recoonvertido a
MP3 128Kbits para facilitar la subida.
