La dura postguerra.Al términar la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Berlín es una ciudad en ruinas donde proliferan todo tipo de mafiosos. Edmund, de 15 años, intenta sobrevivir con su familia mediante todo tipo de artimañas.
Tras las magníficas Roma, ciudad abierta y Paisà, que retrataban las penalidades de distintos personajes del bando aliado durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el impulsor del neorrealismo italiano, Roberto Rossellini y su guionista habitual, Sergio Amidei, componen un dramático fresco de las penalidades de los supervivientes del bando alemán. El cineasta presenta personajes humanos, y utiliza actores no profesionales bastante expresivos (DeCine21).

Nella Berlino sconfitta e distrutta, avvolta in un'atmosfera di incubo e di fame, un ragazzo tredicenne, Edmund, deve provvedere alle necessità della famiglia, composta dal vecchio genitore ammalato, dal fratello maggiore, già appartenente all'esercito, ed ora fuggiasco, e dalla sorella, che la sera frequenta gli ambienti militari alleati. Il piccolo Edmund, per istigazione del suo vecchio maestro, al quale si rivolge per aiuto, avvelena il padre: i deboli e gli inutili debbono essere eliminati perchè i più forti, i migliori si salvino. Preso dal rimorso e dal dubbio, ritorna per avere chairimenti dal maestro, che lo scaccia trattandolo da assassino. Abbandonato da tutti, brancola per le vie distrutte della città, passa di fronte ad una chiesa, dalla quale, col dolce suono di un organo, si sprigiona una promessa di vita; ma tira avanti. Salito sul campanile, vede la sua casa, dalla quale stanno portando via il padre morto e, disperato, si getta nel vuoto. (Cinematografo)

AMG REVIEW: Before beginning to shoot on a shoestring budget in March of 1947, the director described his experience of the desolate city. "The city was deserted. The gray of the sky flowed back into the streets and from the height of a man, one could look over the fallen roofs. To find the streets again under the ruins, people had cleared the rubble away, into piles." Employing, as usual, non-professional actors to achieve a greater objectivity, the director nonetheless shapes a drama of chilling power from the simplest of materials. Despite the ubiquity of the sobering spectacle of devastation, in the quiet scene of Herr Enning playing a Hitler speech to the attentive boy, Rossellini suggests the damage which had been done to an entire generation through the relentless brainwashing of fascism. By making Edmund neither especially sympathetic nor heroic, the director heightens one's identification, making the final subjective, almost hallucinatory tracking shot almost unbearable in its intensity. -- Michael Costello

Rossellini's late career marks a return to his nonrealist period, now critically reexamined, in such works as the commercially successful General della Rovere, and his eventual turn to the creation of didactic films for television.
