Comentario: La vida de Nora, presa condenada por asesinato que se enfrenta a la muerte en la silla eléctrica, es reproducida a través de una narración en off en sucesivos flashbacks y flashforwards. El film se basa parcialmente en la trama de The Sin of Madelon Claudet (Edgar Selwyn, 1931) y la compleja técnica narrativa del guión de Preston Sturges en The Power and the Glory (William K. Howard, 1933), también utilizada por Orson Welles en Citizen Kane (1941).
Protagonizada por la sensual Zita Johann, esposa de John Houseman (que poco después se convertiría en socio de Welles en el Mercury Theatre), más conocida por su papel como objeto de deseo de Boris Karloff en The Mummy (1932) de Karl Freund.

Having confessed to murder, Nora Moran (Zita Johann) sits sadly on death row, waiting her date with the electric chair. In flashback, the audience is apprised of the events leading up to this present sorry state. It turns out that Nora is innocent; she has taken the blame to shield her lover, Governor Bill Crawford (Paul Cavanaugh) -- the only man who can issue the pardon that will save her. Ridden with guilt, Crawford desperately tries to phone the prison and rescue his sweetheart before it's too late. A trick-ending allows the audience to make its own mind up regarding the outcome. -- Hal Erickson
AMG REVIEW: Legend has it that Helen Hayes was somewhat embarrassed at winning an Oscar for a work as blatantly manipulative and melodramatic as The Sin of Madelon Claudet, but Hayes' performance overcomes the limitations of the material and, more importantly, even manages to elevate that material. Hayes is simply stunning, investing every moment of this sudsy tearjerker with an honesty that makes even its most stilted dialogue come alive. Her naïveté in the early segment of the film is endearing rather than cloying; it feels real rather than manufactured and, therefore, makes all the more powerful her strongly ambivalent feelings at the birth of her son. Hayes handles the transformations into each of the stages of her life with remarkable facility. In each stage she is practically a different character, yet the audience never once questions that they are all the same woman -- nor questions whether one woman could exhibit so many different facets. While it's hard to see past the star performance, it must be noted that she gets some very solid support from the rest of the cast, especially from a wonderful Lewis Stone and an engaging Marie Prevost. The screenplay of Madelon is tripe, but Hayes and her company make the film worth watching. -- Craig Butler
