Llegaron John Ford y Sam Peckinpah y nos enseñaron cosas sobre México que no conocíamos.Tras el estreno de ‘Pat Garret y Billy the Kid’ (1973), cuyo rodaje fue un verdadero infierno, Peckinpah se puso rápidamente manos a la obra con su siguiente proyecto, una historia ideada por el propio director junto con Frank Kowalski, director de segunda unidad de ‘Junior Bonner’ (id, 1972) y supervisor de guiones. Finalmente fue Gordon T. Dawson quien ayudó al director a desarrollar dicha idea y convertirla en un guión cinematográfico, Dawson había sido guionista no acreditado en ‘La balada de Cable Hogue’ (‘The Ballad of Cable Hogue’, 1970), otro relato supremo sobre un perdedor.
Ford era mi maestro y mi compadre, Peckinpah es mi hijo, no, mi nieto (Emilio Fernández).
La premisa encantó a los artífices del film: Un thriller sobre un hombre al que ponen precio a su cabeza, con la particularidad de que dicho hombre ya está muerto. A partir de ese singular esquema Peckinpah construye la que probablemente sea su última gran obra.

AMG SYNOPSIS: Wealthy Mexican Emilio Fernandez puts a bounty on the head of Alfredo Garcia, who has seduced Fernandez' daughter. Trouble is, Alfredo Garcia is already dead and buried. Barkeep Warren Oates and prostitute Isela Vega (whose services had frequently been used by Garcia) travel to the small town in whose cemetery Garcia is interred, planning to dig up the body and recover the head. Attacked by a shadowy Mexican clan, Vega is murdered and Garcia's body is stolen. Now hoping to avenge Vega, Oates joins Fernandez' homosexual henchmen Gig Young and Robert Webber in killing off the Mexican murderers--and when this is done, Oates turns his gun on Young and Webber. He brings the head of Alfredo Garcia to the eager Fernandez, then pulls off one last blood-spattered act of carnage. -- Hal Erickson
AMG REVIEW: Sam Peckinpah produced many outrageous and challenging films during his career, but Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia stands apart from the pack as the most unusual and demanding entry in his filmography. As a result, casual action fans expecting something like The Getaway will be confounded, but anyone seriously interested in this director's work will be rewarded with a very daring and personal film. The script, which some consider to be an allegory for Peckinpah's experiences in Hollywood, blends gritty sadism and pitch-black dark comedy in equal doses as it depicts Bennie's increasingly surreal journey to fulfill the mission mentioned in the title. The story line rambles a bit at first, but retains interest thanks to intense work from a gifted cast. Gig Young and Robert Webber are amusing and terrifying all at once as a pair of icy (and possibly gay) hit men and Isela Vega gives the film a much-needed shot of human warmth as Elita. However, top honors must be given to Warren Oates for his extraordinary work as Bennie. Oates is all raw nerves and painful sincerity as he charts his characters transition from down-and-out thug to avenging angel with a furious, no-holds-barred intensity. Behind the camera, Peckinpah captures the desperation of his story with unflinching power and works in the occasional bit of gallows humor (as in Bennie's conversations with Garcia's severed head). The action is suprisingly sparse, but Peckinpah delivers a few memorable set pieces, including a hotel room shootout and a tense scene where Bennie visits Garcia's grave with unexpected results. In the end, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is too eccentric and demanding for the casual viewer, but remains worth the time for cult movie enthusiasts and is a necessity for students of Peckinpah's filmmaking. -- Donald Guarisco
