Sidney Lumet definió esta película como "Retrato de un auténtico rebelde con causa". Basada en hechos reales, retrata con verismo los niveles de corrupción de la policía neoyorquina, que Frank Serpico trata de sacar a la luz desde que es un novato recién licenciado de la Academia, hasta que es un poli completamente curtido en la calle. La película arranca con un Serpico que acaba de ser tiroteado, y luego sigue como un largo flash-back que explica cómo se ha llegado a esa situación. Con un estilo áspero y sin concesiones, se muestra su honradez y su disposición a colaborar con sus superiores, pero el nivel de trapicheos es tal en lo que se refiere a complicidad, tolerancia o "mirar a otro lado", que la tarea no es fácil. Y mientras sus compañeros, que aceptan los habituales sobornos, le hacen la vida poco menos que imposible.
El film muestra además la dificultad por conciliar vida familiar y profesional en una situación de este tipo -hay escenas repletas de tensión dramática de Serpico con las mujeres con las que comparte su vida-, y cómo las buenas intenciones para dar la vuelta a las situaciones de corrupción no bastan, cuando hay una visión política o de aceptación tácita del estado de cosas. Al Pacino hace una composición verdaderamente memorable, asumiendo a la perfección el desaliño de su personaje y su indignación y sensación de impotencia por lo que parece la inutilidad de sus denuncias. Cuenta el actor que tuvo ocasión de conocer al auténtico personaje, y cuándo le preguntó por qué se arriesgó a hablar, Serpico le dijo: "No lo sé, Al, supongo que lo hice porque... si no lo hubiera hecho, ¿cómo me sentiría cuando escuchara una pieza de música". Añadía Pacino: "¡Qué forma de expresarlo!" (DeCine21).
Biopic of the New York City detective whose anti-corruption efforts in the 1960s and early 1970s led to the creation of the Knapp Commission and the uncovering of widespread corruption of police officials at all levels. All of his life, Frank Serpico had wanted to be a policeman. He learns at an early stage in his career however that even the cop on the beat is somewhat corrupt accepting free meals and the like. As he advances in his career he finds that corruption is rampant, particularly in the Plainclothes Division, where they collect more in graft that they do in salary. His refusal to take any money puts him in bad stead with his colleagues to the point that his life may be in danger. Transferred to the Narcotics Squad, he is shot by a drug dealer when his partners fail to support him. Serpico resigned from the NYPD in 1972 (IMDb).
AMG Synopsis: Adapted by Waldo Salt and Norman Wexler from Peter Maas's book, Sidney Lumet's drama portrays the real-life struggle of an honest New York City cop against a corrupt system. Neophyte officer Frank Serpico (Al Pacino) is determined not to let his job get in the way of his individuality. Despite his colleagues' leery reactions, he keeps one foot firmly planted in the counterculture, sporting a beard and love beads and living in bohemian Greenwich Village, while he performs his police duties with dispatch. Serpico's peers genuinely ostracize him, however, when he refuses to take bribes like everybody else. Appalled by the extent of police corruption, Serpico goes to his superiors, but when he discovers that they have ignored his charges, he takes the potentially fatal step of breaking the blue wall of silence and going public with his exposé. Serpico's revelations trigger an independent investigation by the Knapp Commission, but they also make him a marked man, permanently changing his life. Shot on location with a gritty emphasis on documentary-style realism, Serpico presents a city in decay both literally and morally, as everybody is in on the take, and the cops and criminals are almost interchangeable. Released in late 1973, after months of revelations of Presidential malfeasance in the breaking Watergate scandal, Serpico's true story of bureaucratic depravity touched a cultural nerve, and the film became a hit with both critics and audiences, particularly for Pacino's complex performance as the honest, long-haired whistleblower. One year after his star-making triumph in The Godfather, Pacino was nominated for an Oscar again, and lost again; Lumet and Pacino would reunite two years later for another true New York story, Dog Day Afternoon.
AMG Review: The first of two Sidney Lumet movies to feature stellar performances from the kinetic Al Pacino, Serpico was released at a heated moment in American culture and touched a nerve with American audiences. Based on a series of real events, the film targeted institutional corruption in the New York City Police Department and fit in stylistically with the gritty cop dramas of the time, including The French Connection and the Dirty Harry movies. Thematically, it was one of the first pictures since the heyday of film noir to tackle police corruption. Fresh from his breakthrough in The Godfather, Pacino is excellent as the whistle-blowing title character; he received his second Oscar nomination for the role.
