The Secret Bride is Ruth Vincent (Barbara Stanwyck), the daughter of Governor Vincent (Arthur Byron). Attorney general Robert Sheldon (Warren William) falls in love with Ruth and they marry, but Sheldon insists that their marriage be kept secret. It seems that the Governor has been accused of accepting $10,000 in bribes, and Sheldon doesn't want to be accused of complicity while he investigates the matter. In the course of events, two murders occur, and it's up to Ruth to straighten the mess out. But how will she be able to manage this without involving herself or her secret husband in the scandal? It's funny how the various TV cable services tend to trot out The Secret Bride whenever a real-life political scandal bursts onto the scene.
Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Roxy's week-end contribution is a dashing homicide melodrama which seeks, with only minimum success, to conceal its frailties by the violence of its pace. A rather minor product of the racy Warner studios, "The Secret Bride" kills off its victims at such break-neck speed that it is pretty easy to sit through despite the vast lack of conviction which distinguishes the narrative. Barbara Stanwyck and Warren William appear to be quite suited to the nimble requirements of the plot, but you ought to be advised to pay particular attention to Grant Mitchell, a sniveling and frightened underling, if you are anxious to keep abreast of the developments in the picture.
In "The Secret Bride" Miss Stanwyck is the daughter of a Governor and Mr. Williams is the Attorney General to whom she is secretly wed. When a convict, whom the kindly Governor has pardoned, enters $10,000 to the Governor's account and then kills himself, there is an immediate clamor for impeachment. Thus it is the sad duty of the Attorney General to dig up unpleasant evidence against his own father-in-law. His secret bride, however, convinces him of her father's innocence, and together they set out to uncover the mystery which lurks beneath the surface facts.
It is perhaps needless to report that the climactic disclosure of the assassin's identity comes as a great surprise to the players as well as to the audience. Arthur Byron is in his usual excellent form as the harried Chief Executive, while Douglas Dumbrille, who dies picturesquely in the rain, is properly enigmatic as the assistant of the Attorney General. Put "The Secret Bride" down as one of the more routine entertainments.
