In 1866, in the spring of Venice, an underground rebel movement against the Austrian occupation in Italy is getting stronger. The married Countess Livia Serpieri (Alida Valli) sees her cousin challenging the Austrian Lieutenant Franz Mahler (Farley Granger) for a duel in the opera and being arrested and sent to the exile for one year. When she meets Mahler, she first hates him but after a night together walking along the streets in Venice, she falls deeply in love for him, becoming his mistress. When the war starts, she moves to her property in the country missing Mahler. When he visits her during a night, she forgets her principles, decency and betrayals her cause with cruel and tragic consequences (IMDb).
AMG SYNOPSIS: Italian director Luchino Visconti dishes up his usual blend of elegance and decadence in Senso. The international cast includes French film star Alida Valli as a Italian countess married to a Venetian nobleman, and English leading man Farley Granger as an Austrian military officer. The two are swept up in the Austrian empire's evacuation of Italy in 1866. Valli and Granger fall in love, but Valli ultimately realizes that the officer is interested only in her wealth and prestige, whereupon she gives him over to a firing squad. Visconti had wanted Ingrid Bergman and Marlon Brando for his leads, but when Bergman's husband Roberto Rossellini would not permit her to appear in the film, Brando also bowed out. Originally running 166 minutes, Senso was released in a radically cut version in the US in 1968, titled Summer Hurricane; yet another recut version popped up in England as The Wanton Contessa. -- Hal Erickson
AMG REVIEW: Senso is a stunning film, featuring Luchino Visconti at his most operatic. With Alida Valli and Farley Granger thrown in for marquee value, the film chronicles the last days of the Austrian-Italian conflict, in the spring of 1866. A performance of Il Trovatore serves as the backdrop for a stormy romance between Livia Serpieri, trapped in a loveless marriage, and a young Austrian office-worker, Franz Mahler (Granger). Their affair is bound to end tragically, and it does, but not before Visconti and his scenarists (including additional dialogue from Tennessee Williams and Paul Bowles) have created a delirious world of color, music, deception, and betrayal in which revenge is always the strongest motivation for all human affairs. Senso simply demands to be seen on a cinema screen; reduced to the dimensions of even the most grandiose home theater system, the film loses much of its visual impact. Yet Visconti's vision is so over the top, so deliciously abandoned, that the trip is well worth taking, even on DVD. A Venezia, alla vigilia della battaglia di Custoza, una patrizia veneta, la contessa Livia Serpieri, il cui marito parteggia per l'Austria, si innamora di un giovane ufficiale austriaco, Franz Mahler. L'amore diventa ben presto passione e non tarda a privarla di ogni ritegno. Franz è un individuo equivoco e vile che finge di amare Livia mentre in realtà mira solo al suo denaro perché ne ha bisogno per pagare un medico e farsi esonerare dal servizio militare. Livia è così cieca che non si accorge di nulla e quando lui le chiede il denaro lei non esita a dargli quello che i patrioti italiani le hanno affidato per le spese di guerra. Franz, avuto quello che voleva, non si fa più vivo con Livia, ma lei si mette sulle sue tracce e lo raggiunge. L'incontro è terribile. Livia fuori di sé, corre al Comando austriaco e rivela con quale inganno Franz sia riuscito a farsi esonerare. Il giovane viene fucilato e Livia perde la ragione. (Cinematografo)
"E' inoltre evidente in 'Senso' la lodevolissima intenzione di voler reagire all'oleografico di troppo cinema in costume; il Visconti vi ha spiegato il suo gusto raffinatissimo insinuandovi anche vibrazioni realistiche. Tuttavia, (...) 'Senso' si impone come un quadro assai raffinato, e vasto, e minuzioso, e sapiente.
