SINOPSIS : Max, un presidiario recién salido de la cárcel, maduro, camorrista y pendenciero, encuentra en la carretera, mientras hace autostop, a Lionel, un vagabundo sin destino, mucho más joven que él y de una gran ingenuidad y candidez, al que ofrece la posibilidad de unirse a él como socio en el negocio de lavado de automóviles que pretende montar en Pittsburgh, y con el que aspira a poner fin a su carrera de habitante perpetuo de todo tipo de prisiones. Lionel acepta y, a partir de ese momento, ambos inician un particular periplo viajando como autostopistas o colándose en los furgones de carga de los trenes. El dinero escasea y Max decide visitar a su hermana Coley. En su casa conocerá a una fresca y atractiva amiga de ésta, Frenchy, con la que compartirá una noche de amor. Tras una pelea que origina Max en un bar de carretera, ambos pasan una noche entre rejas. A la salida y previamente a su llegada al destino final, Lionel intenta contactar con su antigua novia, Annie, que vive en Detroit, y de la que huyó tras dejarla embarazada y abrumado por la responsabilidad, con la ilusión de conocer a un hijo del que no conoce nombre ni sexo. They form an unlikely pair as the brawling Max learns a little how Lionel copes with the world: Lionel believes that the scarecrow doesn't scare birds, but instead amuses them - birds find scare-crows funny
