El detective descubre que hizo diversos regalos a una atractiva modelo, Mona Stevens (Lizabeth Scott). John la visita para pedirle una lista de los obsequios recibidos. La gran estafa.John Forbess es un hombre de familia agotado de su trabajo como ejecutivo de una empresa de seguros. Mientras intenta relajarse en compañía de su esposa e hijo, MacDonald un detective privado, descubre irregularidades en el caso de un estafador al que la compañía de Forbess ha beneficiado. John acaba ayudándole a investigar el caso, y cuando visita a una modelo a la que el estafador hacía regalos, descubre que se siente atraído por ella.
André De Toth dirige esta cinta de cine negro que adapta una novela de Jay Dratler. El film va en la línea de grandes obras maestras sobre estafas a compañías de seguros como Perdición, de Billy Wilder (DeCine21).

IMDb. John Forbes is a family man who's tired of the 9 to 5 humdrum of his job an insurance company executive. Life gets a little more exciting for him when he calls upon femme fatale Mona Stevens. Her boyfriend has robbed a store insured by Forbes' company and has showered her with gifts using the loot. Forbes comes to collect the ill-gotten gifts, but the boyfriend is in jail, and Forbes falls hard for Mona and begins an affair. The only problem is that MacDonald, a private dick who freelances for the insurance company, has had his eyes on Mona first. The obsessed MacDonald turns the soon-to-be-released boyfriend against Forbes.
AMG SYNOPSIS: The darker side of the American dream is explored in the fascinating film noir Pitfall. Dick Powell stars as John Forbes, a successful insurance man with a trophy wife named Sue (Jane Wyatt) and a model child named Tommy (Jimmy Hunt). Despite all that he's achieved in life, Forbes feels somehow unfulfilled. During an attempt to recollect illegally purchased goods by a convicted bank robber, Forbes falls for his glamorous client Mona Stevens (Lizabeth Scott). When she "comes on" to him, it sparks an affair between them. Forbes suffers the pangs of guilt, a fact immediately capitalized upon by the seedy private eye MacDonald (Raymond Burr), who is upset because Mona has rejected him. If adultery has been committed, can murder be far behind? Many individual scenes in Pitfall are standouts, notably a brief moment wherein Forbes' son Tommy suffers a horrible nightmare -- in almost exactly the same manner that child actor Jimmy Hunt would endure a similar bad dream in 1953's Invaders from Mars. -- Hal Erickson
