Una tragedia americana
Dramón basado en la novela social de Theodore Dreiser. A George se le presenta un halagüeño panorama cuando su tío le ofrece trabajo, pues ve la oportunidad de ascender socialmente. Además, conoce a la bella Angela de la que se enamora. Pero otra mujer, Alice Tripp, que se cruza en su vida, pone en peligro tan próspera existencia.
Seis Oscar recibió esta película, incluyendo mejor dirección y guión. Montgomery Clift y Shelley Winters tuvieron que conformarse con la nominación. (decine21)
