It is sad that Sydney Greenstreet's career in film was relatively brief - albeit marked by memorable performances in some truly great movies. He may well have had a successful life on the stage in the bulk of his acting life but his roles in film, in a brief eight year period, are all that is preserved from a long and distinguished career. We can only guess at the performances of a young and perhaps thinner Sydney Greenstreet. Despite all this he made his debut in The Maltese Falcon and then a few films later co-starred in Casablanca, more than making up for the delay in the transition to the big screen. The Verdict sees Greenstreet at his finest as the wizened superintendent whose career has been forever marred by an error of judgment that costs a man his life. This is a perfect whodunit/noir/murder mystery that is still gripping and tight despite the slightly melodramatic ending where revenge is possibly carried a little too close to the wire. Lorre is his usual sinister self, fascinated at the thought of exhuming a dead body and Colouris appropriate as the inept detective. Highly recommended.

Sinopsis:
El superintendente Grodman, de Scotland Yard, comete un terrible error
al enviar a la horca a un inocente. Es destituído de su cargo.
Más tarde, el nuevo superintendente tendrá que recurrir a él para resolver un inexplicable asesinato.
Muchas, y muy valiosas joyas nos ha dejado el thriller gótico de los años 40: "The lodger" (1944) y "Hangover Square" (1945), de John Brahm; "Experiment perilous" (1944), de Jacques Tourneur; "A house by the river" (1948), de Fritz Lang; "The spiral staircase" (1946), de Siodmak...
En este caso estamos ante la primera película dirigida por Don Siegel (gran director de la segunda unidad de muchos éxitos de la Warner), tratándose además de una película específicamente planeada por el estudio para el equipo de actores integrado por Peter Lorre y Sydney Greenstreet.
Aunque parezca extraño, Greenstreet es uno de mis actores favoritos. Su sentido del humor y de lo macabro, brilló en toda clase de personajes siniestros, desde "El halcón Maltés" (1941) hasta "Flamingo Road" (1949).
Cuando le daba la réplica a Bogart en varias películas ("Retorno al abismo" (1945), "Casablanca" (1942)...), el resultado era una fiesta interpretativa.
Su presencia siempre resultaba memorable, y la serie de películas de misterio que Warner ideó para él y Peter Lorre, resulta muy disfrutable, entre las que se encuentran "Tres extraños" (Jean Negulesco, 1946), "La máscara de Dimitrios" (J. Negulesco, 1944), o "The verdict" (1946).
Siegel saca gran partido del argumento en esta película, y de su utilización de la niebla londinense, con misteriosas figuras de personas que aparecen en la calle en la oscuridad de la noche.
La novela de base, "The Big Bow Mystery", de Israel Zangwill, proporciona una inteligente trama en la que todos los personajes tienen motivos de sobra para ser los culpables de un asesinato aparentemente perfecto e inexplicable.
Sólo la habilidad del experto Sydney Greenstreet podrá desenmarañar tan complicado caso.
