Still controversial sixty-five years after its premiere, this final collaboration between Marlene Dietrich and her mentor Josef von Sternberg divides viewers into those who love its ravishing decor and its laser concentration on an unusually adult relationship, and those who find it cold, humorless, lacking character development, and too concerned with surfaces. During a seemingly endless fiesta in Seville-on-the-Paramount lot, dashing young Cesar Romero pursues Dietrich, the elusive femme fatale who is showcased in a riot of fans, mantillas, and streamers. However, much of the film is a cautionary narrative in which the older Lionel Atwill bitterly warns Romero against the ruthless "Concha Perez" by relating his sadomasochistic relationship with her. [The censors forced Sternberg to cut a song called "If It's Not Pain, It's Not Love"]. Since Atwill is made up to resemble Sternberg himself, and since the director's involvement with his star is no secret, the obsessive thrust of the story seems inescapably personal. Some argue that Sternberg made an anti-woman picture: totally unconcerned with her psychology, he objectifies a human being into a cold mannequin. On the other hand, the Dietrich character is presented as a powerful woman, in full control of her finances,her relationships, and thus her destiny. Viewers who like THE SCARLET EMPRESS should also appreciate this one, although it lacks the sympathetic elements of the earlier film. This intensely personal production, with Sternberg himself managing the lighting and camera movements, is undeniably the work of a master film-maker and a peak of Hollywood artifice.
