Film de aventuras basado en una novela de H. Ridder Haggard que narra la expedición de un grupo de exploradores en busca de una "llama de la vida" que proporciona la ansiada inmortalidad a aquel que la encuentre.
Película más que aceptable de entre la avalancha de filmes del mismo género que proliferaron en esta época en Estados Unidos debido a las restricciones del Código Hays, que hacía casi imposible realizar un argumento en cualquier otro género. Robert Day hizo un remake en 1965 con Ursula Andress en el papel de diosa, pero el resultado fue muy inferior a la versión original (DeCine21).
AMG SYNOPSIS: The second novel by British author H. Rider Haggard (his follow up to King Solomon's Mines) became this adventure classic, filmed twice previously in silent form. Randolph Scott stars as Leo Vincey, the descendant of an explorer who, according to family lore, discovered an immortality-bestowing fire on an expedition to a remote area of Manchuria. Leo sets out on a new voyage of discovery to the region's frozen wastes with a British scientist, Horace Holly (Nigel Bruce). Along the way, their team is joined by a trader, Dugmore (Lumsden Hare) and his daughter Tanya (Helen Mack). A tragic avalanche then kills everyone except Leo, Horace, and Tanya. Rescued by tribal shaman Billali (Gustav von Seyffertitz), the trio is led underground to Kor, a secret land with a hot climate ruled over by the cruel Ayesha (Helen Gahagan), better known to the natives as "She Who Must Be Obeyed." -- Karl Williams
AMG REVIEW: Containing many of the ingredients that would award the later Lost Horizons legendary status, She just misses that elevated status. Where Lost Horizons' Shangri La remains a source of inspiration and dreams, She's hidden civilization of Kor is rather more mundane, emerging just this side of ridiculous. Much of the blame should perhaps go to Gahagan's rather lifeless portrayal of the supposedly enticing queen, but Irving Pichel was no Frank Capra and his direction is sometimes downright leaden. In her first -- and, as it turned out, final -- screen performance, Gahagan did her best, but the role seems to have been beyond her much-vaunted capacities and the blame for the film's loss of more than $180,000 at the box office was placed squarely at her feet. Apparently producer Merian C. Cooper's only choice for the role, Gahagan proved a better politician in real life than as ruler of Kor: she was later elected to two terms in the United States Congress on the Liberal ticket. In 1950, she ran for the United States Senate but was defeated by future president Richard Nixon. Opposite Gahagan's title character, Randolph Scott and Helen Mack perhaps lack the extra sparkle that Cooper's first choices, the husband-and-wife team of Joel McCrea and Frances Dee, may have added. Despite these caveats, She fully deserves its rediscovery. -- Hans J. Wollstein
