A German bisexual male suffers the indignities of prejudice in a small town. After taking up with the town floozie -- who tries to trap him into marriage and claims he has impregnated her -- the people of the town turn from teasing to cruelty, and the young man decides to leave. When he gives a local boy a ride on his bicycle, the act of kindness is misconstrued to be a sexual advance. The boy's mother is livid and fears her mentally challenged son may have been molested. The floozie continues to pressure the young man into marrying her, until the weight of it all becomes too much; he snaps and kills her. Soon the entire town conspires to hunt down the young man like an animal in this disturbing story of prejudice and intolerance (All Movie Guide).

Claqueta mayo, 2008).Of all the new crop of films by new German directors, this first film by Peter Fleischmann has attracted the most attention, and is based upon a prizewinning play by 25-year-old Martin Sperr. Hunting Scenes from Bavaria is a contemporary political play, which, in its broadest viewpoint, is an examination of the social order and its morals. It is set in Lower Bavaria, not because that particular locale is the source of the actions taking place in the film, but because the overall pattern of behavior in German village life was the best way to illustrate a certain sociological process: the hunting or persecution of human beings who, because of certain peculiarities, are living outside of the social order. The subject of aggression is at the center of Fleischmann’s film, and it is fascinating and horrifying to watch the interchangeability of victims in this story of inbred vindictiveness among the villagers of Unholzing. In this idyllic-seeming place, everyone knows and depends upon on everyone else, and in such a closed community, a defect becomes an evil—a mistake, a sin. When Abram, a young mechanic returns to the village after having lived and worked in the city, it is soon learned that he has served a jail term for sexual inversion. This information sets everything into motion. Abram’s mother, who has not fully been accepted by the village because she had come from elsewhere, is reviled. She, in turn scorns her son. In an effort to forget his past and clear himself in the eyes of the villagers, Abram has an affair with a village girl. But the villagers remain adamant; not only do they continue to persecute Abram but others as well who seem different in any way. This powerful, bitter film achieves profundity because it is so honestly presented and mostly played by nonprofessionals (the actual people of Unholzing). The role of Abram is enacted by the playwright himself, and in the final analysis, he and the entire cast succeed in making a vivid denunciation of the fascist system—where fear makes hunters out of the hunted (Albert Johnson, San Francisco International Film Festival).

Tras dirigir diversos cine-clubs y rodar varios cortometrajes y mediometrajes, Fleischmann (1937) trabajó como ayudante de dirección con varios cineastas franceses. En 1967 realiza su primer largometraje, un documental titulado Das Herbst der Gammlers.

Triunfó a nivel internacional con su siguiente trabajo: Escenas de caza en la baja Baviera (Jagdszenen aus Niederbayern, 1969), presentada en Cannes y recompensada con el premio Georges Sadoul. Se trató de una espléndida denuncia contra la persistencia del racismo en una pequeña comunidad de la baja Baviera, que margina y acorrala a un homosexual de la misma manera que aísla y explota a una minoría de trabajadores turcos. Sin mezclar nunca el documental con la ficción, el punto de vista de este director es el de un documentalista y su visión la de un etnólogo que rechaza cualquier tipo de identificación con los personajes, ya sean positivos o negativos, analizando solamente sus costumbres: la represión sexual y la ritualidad del comer y del beber.
Sus siguientes trabajos -en la línea de este exitoso film- fueron muy inferiores: Dorotheas Rache (1973), una autocomplaciente fábula simbólica sobre el mundo donde describe un universo underground lleno de proxenetas, prostitutas y masoquistas; Der Dritte Grad (1975), una horrible y pretenciosa película épica sobre el nacimiento de una extraña dictadura y la resistencia que oponen los oprimidos; y El virus de Hamburgo (1979), un panfleto con preocupaciones ecologistas.- Rafa Morata, Grandes del Nuevo Cine Alemán.
